February 2nd
{s} I have three favorite holidays and while I won't get into details about all of them right now, this post is dedicated to my love for Groundhog Day. I think it all started when I worked at a video store in high school; I was able to bring home one free VHS (showing my age here) per night and around February 2nd my movie-of-choice was always Groundhog Day. My family and I would belly-laugh, recite our favorite lines (“Don’t drive angry”) and eagerly await for Ned Ryerson to make his appearance or Phil Connors to rob the bank. Even as my brother and I left the nest and started our own families, this day has continued to unite our family, expanding to our spouses and children. Sometimes we have gathered together to watch the, now DVD, version and answer trivia questions and other times we simply watch the flick in our own homes, exchanging text messages full of quotes and memes. It is a holiday!
By definition holiday is a “day fixed by law or custom on
which ordinary business is suspend in commemoration of some event or in honor
of some person.” In my family February 2nd is a holiday – a
customary day set aside to laugh, honor Punxsutawney Phil and more importantly,
reflect on cherished memories of growing up in a family full of love. I
know that even if my parents, brother and I cannot spend the day together, we
are all celebrating this day as one.

Groundhog’s Day…because it really is his day)
